Discover how hypnotherapy for fear of flying can help you conquer flight anxiety naturally. Learn what to expect, how it works and why it's effective. And hear from rewired clients that conquered their fear.
The fear of flying, also known as aviophobia, affects millions of people around the world. It can range from mild discomfort to severe anxiety or panic attacks at just the thought of boarding an airplane.
Whether it’s fear of the plane crashing, of turbulence, enclosed spaces or a loss of control, this phobia can limit both personal and professional opportunities. But there's hope—hypnotherapy for fear of flying is a powerful and natural approach that’s helping more people take back control of their travel experience.
Clinical Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic practice that uses deep relaxation, visualisation, and suggestion to reach the subconscious mind. It is recognised by the British Medical Association and used within the NHS.
While hypnotised– and in this deeply focused state - clients are more receptive to positive suggestions, allowing them to reprogram unhelpful thoughts and fears.
Unlike stage hypnosis, clinical hypnotherapy is a collaborative process where the client remains aware, relaxed, and in control at all times.
Fear of flying is often driven by irrational thoughts and automatic emotional responses. These can include catastrophic thinking (e.g., “What if the plane crashes?”), fear of enclosed spaces, turbulence, or a feeling of helplessness while in the air. Once these thoughts start to build up, our brains can make ‘pattern matches’ between certain feelings and those thoughts or experiences.
Many of these reactions originate in the subconscious mind—where logic plays a lesser role, and fear can become amplified over time.
Hypnotherapy works by interrupting these automatic fear cycles and retraining the subconscious mind. There has been large amounts of Medical research and trials in the past 30-40 years that have helped scientists to better understand deep relaxation and hypnosis and how it can work. There are 3 main parts to my sessions for clients wanting to more quickly overcome their fear of flying . Often you might be working to a date for an upcoming holiday. 4-6 weeks is generally sufficient to get control over your fear.
1] Initial Consultation [IC] : This is the first part of our work together, generally lasting up to 90 minutes. In this first consultation, I’ll explain how our brain works, why they create phobias and fears [such as aviophobia] and how hypnotherapy works to ‘rewire’ these templates.
2] Deep relaxation audio : After our IC, I will send to you a tailored relaxation audio, that I recommend you listen to daily [at bedtime] for the course of our sessions together. It is roughly 20-25 minutes long and many clients report feeling side benefits of improved sleep and increased focus.
3] Weekly sessions together : With clinical hypnosis for fear of flying, we will need to see each other once per week for approximately 4-6 weeks , after the IC. Each session usually lasts 60 minutes and starts with a consultation to understand your unique fears and progress this past week . You’ll then be guided into a state of deep relaxation and focus.
In this state, your hypnotherapist may use affirmations, metaphors, and mental exercises to help shift your internal narrative around flying.
By week 3 or 4, the majority of my clients report feeling calm about the thought of their upcoming travel, having more control over any negative thoughts or projections about their trip or holiday.
Of course, the ‘proof’ can really only come with the trip to the airport and the flight, and I also teach strategies – including an Anchor gesture- to help you manage any anxiety on your trip.
Success Stories and Effectiveness
While results vary, many people experience significant improvements after just a few hypnotherapy sessions. Studies have shown that hypnotherapy can reduce physiological symptoms of anxiety (such as increased heart rate and sweating), improve sleep before travel, and even reduce the need for anti-anxiety medication.
My most recent client in this area , a lady in her 60s , kindly wrote a review for us in June 2025 ;
“Having suffered increasingly with fear of flying and claustrophobia over the past few I decided to try hypnotherapy, without much idea of what to expect.
I have now completed a course of therapy with Bob and found it a hugely positive experience. From the outset I felt at ease as a result of Bob’s pleasant and professional manner and found the garden setting very relaxing. The theoretical explanations of how phobias can become entrenched in the brain were particularly helpful as a first step in understanding how I could begin the process of dealing with the claustrophobia.
Since completing the sessions in May I have been on two flights without any feeling of panic. I have also been in several lifts, which I have avoided for many years.
Bob has given me the strategies and confidence to continue working on the phobia in the future. I can recommend ‘re-wired therapy’ wholeheartedly.
Yes—many people report a significant reduction in their flying anxiety after just a few sessions. Hypnotherapy has been shown to help with:
· Lowering anxiety symptoms (e.g., rapid heartbeat, sweating)
· Reducing panic before flights, when packing and heading to the airport, or in security / check in queues.
· Manage any anxiety at take-off and in flight
· Improving sleep and mood before travel
· Lessening dependence on medication
Whether you want to fly for work, holidays, or family, hypnotherapy for flying anxiety can offer a lasting solution without the need for medication.
